What is a land trust?
The Land Trust is a private, nonprofit, service organization, directed and managed by its members, whose purpose is to promote, for the benefit of the general public, the preservation of open space and natural resources, principally in, but not limited to, the Town of Winchester.  In addition, the Land Trust’s efforts and active management will extend into other environmental areas:
  • safeguarding interesting geological features and areas of ecological value;
  • preserving unique scenic, natural and historic sites;
  • promoting scientific study; and
  • educating the public about its local natural resources.
The Land Trust seeks to supplement the Town’s open space planning, yet offers advantages over government agencies, and can act free of political restraints.  Since the Land Trust is private, it can negotiate with potential land donors with speed, privacy, diplomacy, and flexibility.  Moreover, since the Land Trust is primarily composed of Winchester residents, it is sensitive to the unique needs of our town and its citizens.
